Ford Bronco Raptor with Garrett Turbos

Bronco Raptor Turbo Upgrade: Garrett PowerMax Install | BBOR

The Bronco Raptor already has twin turbos. Here's why one owner swapped them for Garrett PowerMax units, what it takes to install them, and how much power they really support.

The Bronco Raptor already has twin turbos. So why would anyone pull them off? Because the factory turbos are sized for a warranty, not for what the 3.0L EcoBoost can actually handle, Battle Born Offroad regularly pushes these trucks beyond factory. This owner already had aFe charge tubes, an aFe intake, and a front-mount intercooler on his brand new Bronco Raptor. He wanted the next step, so he brought it to Battle Born Offroad for a set of Garrett PowerMax turbos, SPD catted downpipes, and a custom tune.

It's one of the best bang-for-the-buck power upgrades you can do on an EcoBoost. It's also not as simple as swapping a few nuts and bolts. Here's how it went.

Stock Baseline: What the Bronco Raptor's 3.0L EcoBoost Starts With

  • Engine: 3.0L twin-turbo EcoBoost V6
  • Factory rating: 418 hp and 440 lb-ft
  • Transmission: 10-speed automatic
  • Factory turbos: Built by Garrett, 38mm compressor inducer

That's a lot of power for a stock SUV. But the Bronco Raptor rides on 37-inch tires and runs through a 10-speed, a two-speed transfer case, and four big axles. A lot of that power never makes it to the dirt. Owners who add intakes, charge pipes, and intercoolers eventually hit the limit of how much air the stock turbos can move.

Bronco Raptor Garrett Turbos Being Installed

Why Garrett PowerMax: Built by the Company That Makes the Factory Turbos

Garrett is the original equipment turbo supplier for the Bronco Raptor's 3.0L. So the PowerMax is an upgraded version of the same turbo, engineered to bolt into the factory location with the factory hardware.

Here's what the Garrett PowerMax GT1752S kit (926432-5002S) brings over stock:

  • 41mm compressor inducer vs. 38mm on the factory turbo
  • 18% more compressor flow and 6% more turbine flow than stock
  • Left and right turbos with pre-calibrated electronic actuators, so there's no actuator setup during install
  • Stainless steel turbine housing rated to 950°C
  • Machined speed sensor port if you want to monitor turbo shaft speed later
  • CARB Executive Order D-871-4
  • Fits 2022+ Bronco Raptor and 2024+ Ranger Raptor 3.0L

The bigger compressor is the whole point. More inducer means more air at the same boost, and more air is what makes more power. Because the turbine side only grew a little, they still spool quick. On the street that means faster response, not more lag.

How Much Power Do Garrett PowerMax Turbos Make on a Bronco Raptor?

This is where you have to read the fine print, because "up to 700 horsepower" gets thrown around a lot.

  • Garrett's rating: The PowerMax kit supports up to 640 horsepower at the crank.
  • Garrett's own test build: Full-Race Motorsports put 568 wheel horsepower and 591 wheel torque on a Bronco Raptor with PowerMax turbos. That was a gain of 233 whp and 174 wtq over stock. That truck also had an upgraded high-pressure fuel pump, a custom tune, and ran E50 ethanol.
  • What that means: Numbers in the 650 to 700 crank horsepower range are possible, but only with fuel system upgrades, ethanol, and a custom tune. On pump gas with a stock fuel system, expect less.

This build kept the stock fuel system, so it's not a 700 horsepower truck today. It is a big step over stock, and it's set up so the owner can add fuel later and keep going.

Future upgrade path: if this owner wants to chase the top of what these turbos can do, the next steps are a high-pressure fuel pump upgrade, an ethanol blend, and a retune. The turbos are already there.

SPD Catted Downpipes: Letting the Bigger Turbos Breathe

Bigger turbos move more air in, so more exhaust has to get out. The factory 3.0L downpipes are restrictive, mostly because of the cast turbo flanges. SPD's catted downpipes replace them with CNC-machined flanges and 3-inch, 304 stainless mandrel-bent tubing.

  • Less back pressure for quicker turbo spool
  • Lower exhaust gas temps (EGTs)
  • High-flow catalytic converters stay in place
  • The owner kept the factory exhaust behind the downpipes, and it sounds good

Lower EGTs matter more out here than people think. Crawling through deep sand in triple-digit heat is low speed and high load, with not much air moving over the truck. That's exactly when heat builds up. Getting the exhaust out faster helps keep temps in check.

The Install: Why the Bronco Raptor Fights You

On a lot of EcoBoost trucks, a turbo swap means dropping the crossmember. The Bronco Raptor adds a twist. Ford mounts the skid plate to that crossmember, so the crossmember can't come out without the skid plate coming with it.

  • Crossmember and skid plate come out together
  • The driver-side downpipe is the hard one. There's no room to slide it back or work it around. It has to come out to the side and then straight down.
  • The fuel tank gets lowered on this build. That was only for downpipe access, because the Bronco Raptor's skid plate blocks the way.

Good news if you're only doing the turbos: you shouldn't have to touch the fuel tank. That step comes from the downpipes on this platform. It's still a job for a shop that has the lift, the tools, and has done one before.

The Tune: Drivability Has to Be Stock or Better

Battle Born finished the build with a custom tune to take advantage of the turbos and downpipes. The goal wasn't the biggest number on a dyno sheet. The goal was a truck that feels like a stock Bronco Raptor when you get in it, just with more boost and more pull behind you.

That means smooth part-throttle, clean shifts, and no weird surging in traffic. A big peak number doesn't help much if the truck is annoying to drive to work.

Is the Garrett PowerMax Turbo Upgrade Street Legal?

The honest answer is: it depends on the whole package, not just the turbos.

  • The turbos: Garrett PowerMax for the 3.0L carries CARB EO D-871-4, so the turbos themselves are 50-state legal as a direct replacement.
  • The downpipes: SPD's downpipes are catted, so this truck should pass a smog check. Catted isn't the same as CARB-approved, though. If you live in California, check before you buy.
  • The tune: Custom tunes generally don't carry a CARB EO. If you need a fully emissions-legal setup, talk to us about which pieces fit your state.

Turbos vs. a Tune Only: Which One Makes Sense?

Not every Bronco Raptor needs new turbos. If you just want the truck to feel stronger and you want to keep it simple, the Ford Performance calibration takes a Bronco Raptor to a rated 455 hp and 536 lb-ft on 91 octane. It's an $850 software flash with a Ford Performance warranty when installed by a qualified tech. That's a great option for a lot of owners.

The PowerMax route makes sense when you've already done the bolt-ons, you want more than a tune alone can give, and you're thinking about fuel upgrades down the road. It costs more and takes real shop time. But it raises the ceiling of what the 3.0L can make, and a tune alone can't do that.

Build at a Glance

  • Vehicle: Brand new Ford Bronco Raptor, 3.0L twin-turbo EcoBoost
  • Already on the truck: aFe charge tubes, aFe intake, front-mount intercooler
  • Turbos: Garrett PowerMax GT1752S kit, left and right
  • Downpipes: SPD catted downpipes
  • Exhaust: Factory, from the downpipes back
  • Fuel system: Stock
  • Tune: Custom, built for stock-or-better drivability

What This Upgrade Costs

The Garrett PowerMax kit runs $3,501.95 for the pair. Downpipes, tuning, and install labor add to that, and labor on a Bronco Raptor is higher than on most EcoBoost trucks because of the crossmember and skid plate. Call us for a full installed quote on your truck.

Bronco Raptor Turbo Upgrade FAQ

Are Garrett PowerMax turbos a direct bolt-on for the Bronco Raptor?

Yes. They're built to replace the factory turbos in the stock location with stock-style fitment, and the actuators come pre-calibrated. The work is in getting to them, not making them fit.

Do Garrett PowerMax turbos need a tune?

To get real gains, yes. A custom tune is how you take advantage of the extra airflow. Bigger power numbers also need fuel system upgrades.

How much horsepower can a Bronco Raptor make with PowerMax turbos?

Garrett rates the kit to support up to 640 crank horsepower. Their test truck made 568 wheel horsepower with a fuel pump upgrade, a custom tune, and E50. Your number depends on fuel, tune, and supporting parts.

Do you have to drop the fuel tank to install Bronco Raptor turbos?

Not for the turbos alone. On this build the tank came down for downpipe access, because the Bronco Raptor's skid plate is mounted to the crossmember and blocks the way.

Will the Garrett PowerMax turbos fit a Ranger Raptor?

Yes. The same kit fits the 2024+ Ranger Raptor, which uses the same 3.0L twin-turbo V6.

Whether your Bronco Raptor is bone stock or already has a list of bolt-ons, there's always another level to take it to. Battle Born Offroad handles the whole job in-house: turbos, downpipes, tuning, and the test drive before it goes home.
